Hello! Carry On is a Rainbow Rowell book, therefore it is a great book. And Carry On was amazing!
Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen.
That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.
Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here--it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.
Carry On - The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story - but far, far more monsters
Like I said before, Rainbow Rowell is an amazing author and I think fans of her previous book had high expectations. The book was very well written, it was definitely Rowell’s style. While the book genre was a bit different, I was still lost in the story and loved it! The book genre was fiction, much like Harry Potter (I will address that later), while Rowell’s previous books have been realistic fiction. This story is just flowing and goofy, which makes for a nice getaway book! In Fangirl, the Simon Snow books were prevalent, but the story did not revolve around them. Most people I know, including myself, skipped the Simon Snow excerpts (what? Don’t judge!) because it distracted from the story, but a whole book on Simon Snow was so fun!
About the Harry Potter similarities. In Fangirl, Simon Snow was the Harry Potter of Rowell’s fictional world. Some of the similarities include: a hero who doesn’t realize he is a hero until he is eleven and does not wish to be a hero, a Hagrid figure in Carry On, a Dumbledore figure in Carry On, the extremely smart and female best friend and the evil and rich nemesis. Plus the fact that they are in a wizard world and there is an evil being out to get the main character. Other than that though, the stories are quite different. The plot lines take very different turns and the story involving the “Voldemort” is very unique, and the fact that the evil nemesis is a vampire.
Overall though, it is easy to forget the Harry Potter connections and enjoy this book. Like I said, the plot lines are very different and very exciting. To me, the first quarter of the book was rather unexciting, but it gets way better at the end, to the point where you don’t want it to end!!
RATING:BUY IT! Plus, it’s super fun to build up your pretty Rowell collection! Reminder: No post next week and Happy Thanksgiving!!
