Hey guys! I am super excited for today's post because I was asked to read this by the author, John A. Heldt! The book sounded good from the blurb, but I found the book itself extremely enjoyable, so don't hesitate to go check it out here!
Joel Smith is taking one last break over the three-day weekend before he has to start really studying for his college finals. The cocky senior decides to have some fun and poke around an abandoned mine. When he emerges from the mine, the date is May, 1941. He is stuck in the past with a cell phone he can't use and money he can't spend. Seeing that he won't be going back to the future soon, he starts a new life with new friends, and his 21 year-old grandmother. He even falls in love. But when an opportunity to return to the present arises, he must decide between the life he had, or the life he made.
The book is categorized as historical fiction, romance, adventure, time-travel and coming of age. I agree with romance, historical fiction and coming of age story. The book is not very adventurous; the book is interesting and entertaining, not action-packed. Time-travel is also a very odd category, because it could refer to time-traveling once, or the whole book going to the future to the past and back. In this case, Joel time travels once in the beginning. Historical fiction is a very good title because Joel jumps to 1941, just before America enters WWII. He wrestled with what knowledge to share- or not and when. He knew that the Japanese were going to attack, but he wasn't sure whether telling his friends would help or hurt them, so his struggle was a very noble one.
When I first read this book, I did not notice the category, coming of age. I totally agree. In Joel's journey to the past, he learns maturity and humbleness, which was a very sweet journey to watch.
The romance in this book is very sweet also. It was not cheesey, or fake, it was heart-warming and simple.
Summary: this book was enjoyable and touching and a great weekend read! Don't forget to check it out on Amazon!
