Samantha Kingston has it all: looks, popularity, the perfect boyfriend. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life. Instead, it turns out to be her last. The catch: Samantha still wakes up the next morning. Living the last day of her life seven times during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death—and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.
When I first got Before I fall, I met Lauren Oliver and she told me to stick with Samantha, our main character, because she ‘got better’. So I think I gave the book a longer time to form an opinion than I initially intended, which was hard, but I’m glad I did. In the beginning I had a hard time really getting through any part of the book. I just couldn’t entice myself to pick it up again once I put it down. That really lasted through most of the book, even near the end. I’m not even really sure what it was, I just had zero interest. Maybe it was just because it was slow? I’m pretty sure I had gazed at it while reading another book, like somehow I was cheating on it with a library book (lol).
Like I said, Samantha was just a pain in the rear, for most of the book she did nothing but act like a stuck up popular girl who thought the world revolved around her, which I get that she was supposed to act that way, but it still put me on edge. Toward the end of the book though, she did seem to show more of an appreciation for her life and the people in it. Let me tell you, that was a huge relief! She had such a heavy and depressing attitude most of the time. *Mental eye roll*
Over all, I was not such a big fan of the book, since it was super slow and I couldn’t stand Samantha for most of the book. It was very, ‘Meh’. It took me a whopping two-ish months to read it. The level of determination I had to finish it was at about ten percent with the last 100 pages. I do feel bad saying that though, since Lauren Oliver was so sweet and such a great person! I really hope her other books are better.
Cupcake rating:
