Hey guys! It feels GREAT to be back! Before I start, remember to check out my Exciting Announcement on the Home page! Now without further ado, ( drum roll ) my review of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell!
Cath is a hardcore fangirl of Simon Snow, ( the Harry Potter of our world), and so is her twin sister Wren. To get through their mother leaving, both girls bury themselves in the world of Simon Snow. Dressing up as characters for movie premiers, joining Simon Snow chatrooms and especially, writing fan fiction. But as they grow up, Wren grows out of fandom, leaving Cath clinging to fandom, because she doesn't want to let go. When they go to college, Wren tells Cath she doesn't want to be roommates, while Cath is alone and far outside her comfort zone. Cath ends up with a sullen roommate whose charming, outgoing boyfriend is all ways around. Her fiction writing professor absolutely despises fan fiction and a classmate who loves to co-write stories with her. So now Cath has to try and see if she can make it on her own, without Wren holding her hand. Can she do it?
First off, I really like this author. She has a simple, yet detailed way of writing that pulls you into the story. She has written four novels, and I have read and loved three of them.
I also loved the plot. It seems a like a cliche coming-of-age story, but it is very different. For one thing, the time period is current, so it is not set in some Scottish castle, but in modern society where you can more closely relate to Cath's feelings. Another thing that is unique is that it takes place at a college where there are more things Cath has to navigate, each in turn contributing to a great story.
And at last, the characters. Characters, for me, are really what pulls a story together. I love reading about the amazing characters with their little quirks or weaknesses and the characters in Fangirl were no exception. There were all sorts of different personalities that added all the fun and silly pieces to this great story. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I would happily reread it!
