Hello everyone!! So today’s post is somewhat different than usual. It is half informative for any authors who might happen to read this site, and it is half article. I found an article similar to this by Laura C. I thought it was extremely interesting and it got me thinking. So here are my personal reasonings for no longer accepting ARC’s.
When I first started blogging I didn’t even know what it was, but it turned out to basically be a book sent out to reviewers before it’s release date so that the public becomes aware of it. Now I know you are probably going “What could she possibly have against free books that you get to read before anyone else?!”. But I am going to tell you.
I like to choose my own books. Just like anything else you can have a style in, I have my reading style and I don’t like people telling me what to do or read. I find I can enjoy a book much more if I chose it myself and I can be sure that it is something I will like ( I like to inspect my books before purchasing them!).
There is pressure on you to like that book. When you agree to read the author’s ARC, you are also agreeing to review it no matter what you thought of it. The pressure can affect your enjoyment of the book and make you feel like you would be a horrible person if you posted a negative review of the book. I have always been very mindful of people’s feelings and I would hate to have to post something that I knew would hurt them.
Most ARC’s come in ebook form. I LOVE physical books, and sometimes I just can’t get away with ebooks. There are some books I love to have on my kindle, like the Outlander series, and there are books that are only published in kindle, but I would usually rather have a physical book. There have also been some technical difficulties lately between my kindle and computer and I now find it hard to read some ARC’s because the format was altered when being transferred.
I don’t need my to-read pile getting bigger. I like to choose my own books and make my own list of books to read. I am actually suffering from a severe reading slump because the next three books I need to read are ARC’s and there are other books I would rather read.
There are plenty of old books that sound like great reads too. This sounds weird for a book blogger, but I’m usually not super obsessed or even really care about new releases unless it is part of a series. So my choices are usually older books or even classics. I just really don’t mind reading books that have been published for a long time!
Authors: if I have previously agreed to read and review your book, I will read and review it, but I will not be accepting anymore books from authors. I hope you found this article interesting and I hope to see you join in on Friday’s read along of The Boston Girl!
