Jacob Jankowski just learned of his parent's death. With no where else to go, he runs away along a railroad track. As a circus train chugs down the tracks, Jacob jumps the train and begins a new life at the Benzini Brother's Most Spectacular Show on Earth as a vet for the circus animals. At the Benzini circus, Jacob meets Marlena, the gorgeous woman who stars in the performance. Jacob and Marlena form a close bond with each other, and then with the new elephant, Rosie, who was supposed to salvage the Benzini circus with her jaw-dropping performance. But Rosie didn't have an jaw-dropping performance. This friendship full of love and trust becomes their survival.
I loved this book. It was beautifully written and the characters were lively. I was transported right into the time period, which was Great Depression, and went through the same hardships and joys that the circus family went through. I also was completely enthralled by what went on in the circus, what it was like putting up the tents, traveling by train city to city, the workmen eating separate from the performers.
Sara Gruen also has written Ape House. I haven't read it, but I probably will in the future. I hope to see all of you readers back on Wednesday!
