Hey guys! I hope everyone is having a fantastic three-day weekend! I'm going to get started and review The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.
This is a true account from the Great Depression about Joe Rantz, a young man who was thrown out of his home at age 10 and makes a living for himself on his own. Joe goes to college at the University of Washington where he joins the rowing team with seven other boys. Everyone in the boat is from a working class home with fathers who are loggers or ship builders. This is an inspirational story about how these invisible boys go on to the Olympics, defeating the refined teams of Britain and the East Coast teams, and even beating the Germans on their own turf. The Boys in the Boat is a remarkable read that shows us the great moments of achievements that make us proud to be American.
This is literally one of the best books I have ever read. It was so incredible and exciting, I couldn't put it down. Joe was an extremely strong character, it is so difficult for me to wrap my brain around the fact that his family kicked him out to fend for himself, yet he survived, but he also thrived, living in the woods, eating edible plants, helping older men transport logs, even making money playing the banjo at different clubs.
Joe even paid for his own college every year. His journey was an amazing, winding path that I was hypnotized by. The other boys too, it was amazing when they won, heartbreaking when they lost, I could not tear my eyes away. This book is truly a masterpiece.
