Hello everyone! Happy Friday! I finished this book just last week and I thoroughly enjoyed! You can find it on Amazon here!
Eleven years ago Piper Kerman delivered a suitcase full of drug money to a large and very illegal drug company based in South Africa. The authorities catch one criminal and the whole system collapses. Kerman goes to court and is sentenced to fifteen months in prison. This memoir tracks her life while she lived at Danbury Prison from her first strip search to her final release and everything in between. Most of all, this story is a record of all the friendships she made behind the bars and how even prison cannot take away human relationships.
I thought this book was great! The writing style was fantastic; very detailed, clear and funny! During her time in prison Kerman was constantly writing letters to her family, and later she used those letters to write her memoir, so you were always getting the full emotional experience. Another thing that Kerman added was things that people told her once she was out of prison. Example: Kerman wrote that Larry (her boyfriend) told her that he hated leaving the prison after visiting hours because he felt so wrong leaving her behind in a prison.
Another thing that I liked about this book was I liked Kerman. I could relate to her and she kind of reminded me of myself in some areas. The book was also always moving. It may be boring prison life to her, but for us on the "outside" we get a rare glimpse inside a prison, and I found it completely fascinating. You find out what prisoners do for holidays and even how they get pedicures ( forbidden pedicures!).
One thing I do wish she had covered more was her return to the real world. She mentioned a few times that as soon as she was released a close friend offered her a job, but not much past her release is covered. I think it would have been interesting to see what it was like to adjust to sudden freedom.
Summary: Fantastic book! I highly recommend it! They also turned this book into a series on Netflix! Don't forget to check it out here, or the tv series here!
