Good morning, readers! Today I am excited to review Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter, one of my most recent reads.
In 1962, an American actress arrives on the shores of Porto Vergogna, the most isolated and un-touristic city on the Italian coast. Pasquale, the man who owns the one and only hotel, falls in love with this actress, but this love is complicated. The story follows a number of people who are all unwittingly entwined into this love story that spans 50 years.
This story was well written and the characters were interesting. Overall though, I didn't love the book that much. I have to admit, about fifty pages in, I considered quitting the book, but I made myself finish. I did like the way it was written and enjoyed the characters, but I didn't feel like the story really went anywhere. Because the story changed views from person to person, there were entire chapters that were hard to get through because I didn't particularly like the character or was bored with what that specific character was doing.
I would give this book about three stars, because all though there were parts I really enjoyed, I never felt like the story was progressing towards the end.
I hope to see you on Monday for a review of Cinder!
